9:00 am – Traditional (Book of Common Prayer)
10:30 am – Contemporary (Book of Alternative Services)

“Dear friends in Christ, every year at the time of the Christian Passover we celebrate our redemption through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Lent is a time to prepare for this celebration and to renew our life in the paschal mystery… I invite you therefore, to observe a holy Lent by self-examination, penitence, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, and by reading and meditating on the word of God.” (The Book of Alternative Services p.281)

This invitation to observe a holy Lent is a handy reminder of the purpose of Lent. Lent is not the spiritual answer to the practice of making New Year’s resolutions. The disciplines of Lent are not meant to be attempts at self-improvement through exercises in will power. Instead, they are meant to prepare us to celebrate what God in Christ has done for us. They are meant to help us make room to celebrate by pushing to the side those things that get in the way of our celebrating.

As we begin our journey through Lent to the annual celebration of Christ’s victory over sin and death I invite you to consider, “by self-examination,” what it is that may be getting in the way of your celebrating. What’s keeping you from celebrating what God has done in and through Jesus, and what might we do to help you celebrate more fully
