February 21
9:00 am – Traditional (Book of Common Prayer)
10:30 am – Contemporary (Book of Alternative Services)

As we continue our journey through the season of Lent it’s important that we remember what Lent is for. The purpose of Lent is not to help us lose weight through fasting, or curb our compulsion for sweets by giving up chocolate. The purpose of Lent is to prepare us to celebrate.

This may seem as a surprise considering how somber and even depressing the tone of Lent can seem at times. An Anglican priest I know jokingly wishes his parishioners a “miserable Lent” every year in the way most people wish others a “Merry Christmas” or a “Happy Easter.”

But the celebration for which Lent is meant to prepare us is no joke and it is anything but miserable. In Lent we prepare to celebrate again Jesus’ victory over sin and death by his death and resurrection. In Lent we prepare to celebrate the saving acts of God by which he has made known to us his gracious love and given us the promise of new life. These are wonders which not only stretch but may even exceed our capacity to celebrate, which means we must prepare to celebrate them.

I pray, however miserable or merry your journey through Lent may be, that you are being made ready to truly celebrate the events which we will remember again this Easter and that you are having a blessed and holy Lent.
