This Week’s Holy Slogan is ‘Magnify!’
Last week we heard the angel say to Mary and, in a way, say to us “Do not be afraid.” The opposite of fear is faith, that is the willingness to trust God even when our circumstances are very difficult and/or full of uncertainty. When Mary learned that she had been called to bear and give birth to the Son of God her faith was expressed in three simple words “let it be,” but the events into which that faith led Mary were so sweepingly glorious that they will never be forgotten.
Mary’s faith is also expressed in the words of what is often called ‘The Song of Mary’ found in Luke 1:46-55. In it she says, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” God’s goodness and power are magnified in Mary’s faith and in the faith of each one of us who put our trust in him. This Sunday, on the morning of Christmas Eve we are going to magnify God’s goodness and power by telling again the story of one of the most wonderful things God has ever done, the story of how God become one of us so that we could be made one with him.
